With two weeks to go, Donald Trump goes to Pennsylvania to remember Arnold Palmer

The location made sense: Latrobe, Pennsylvania.

The mission, as described by close Trump aide, Jason Miller, who told the media that the candidate would use his speech to present his closing arguments in this Presidential campaign. A logical purpose about two weeks out from election day and with millions already voting.

No doubt, Miller and other leaders in the Trump campaign had clear expectations for the headlines and news coming out of the event.

What did they get?

From the Associated Press, in a story running worldwide, Donald Trump earned this headline: Trump kicks off a Pennsylvania rally by talking about Arnold Palmer’s genitalia

Surely this headline is unmatched in any prior election.

I could say that Trump’s twelve minute tribute to Arnold Palmer was just a golf story gone wrong. But, that would be unfair to golf stories.

One just has to wonder what the candidate intended in this moment nearing the end of the campaign when time is precious.

In some ways, the earlier parts of the twelve minute rant were perhaps more damaging, but those moments are likely to be ignored. Early in the impromptu Palmer tribute, Trump explained how he asked Arnold Palmer why, if he could afford to live anywhere, he chose Latrobe, Pennsylvania. He left out the word “Godforsaken” as he stood before people who are actually proud to live in the town, once again finding a way to bring an insult to the very people who came out to attend his rally.

Honestly, I have no clue how to explain one of the more bizarre twelve minute moments in this year’s Presidential campaign.
